Attention UBC members,
It has come to our attention that scammers are trying to get personal information from union members by calling them and claiming to be with a pension trust fund. The scamming caller typically tells the member that they need his or her social security number or SIN in Canada, date of birth, bank account number, and other information under the guise of issuing pension benefits.
Authorized staff from a trust fund or union should never reach out to you and ask you to provide personal information, such as social security numbers and birthdates, over the phone. They might ask you to confirm information they provide but should never ask you for that information.
If you are ever unsure about whether the person calling is from the entity they claim to be from, you should let them know that you will call them back using the published phone number for them. Do not give them your personal information.
You can find a directory of trust funds and regional councils on the UBC's website: For Our Members - United Brotherhood of Carpenters
